Spring (March-May) for pleasant weather and blooming azaleas.|Fall (September-November) for cooler temperatures, beautiful foliage, and fewer crowds.
Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes as you will be on your feet and on unpaved paths.|Opt for light, breathable fabrics in the spring and summer to stay cool in the Georgia heat.|In fall and winter, dressing in layers is advisable as mornings can be cool.|A hat and sunglasses are recommended for sun protection year-round.
Founded in 1736 by Noble Jones, Wormsloe began as a fortified homestead and farm on the Isle of Hope. Its strategic location on a coastal peninsula was crucial for the defense of the young Georgia colony against Spanish Florida. Jones's original wattle-and-daub house was later replaced by the fortified tabby structure, the ruins of which remain today. The site evolved from a military outpost to a plantation over generations, reflecting the broader economic and social changes of colonial and antebellum Georgia.
Cancellation policies vary depending on the specific tour you book. Most of our partners offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour starts. Please refer to the specific policy listed on the booking page for the tour you select.
Real experiences from real travelers
The pictures don't do it justice. Driving, and then walking, down that oak avenue feels like entering another world. I'm a photographer, and I spent two hours just on the main drive. The history part was interesting too, but the trees are the star. Booking was simple, and the e-ticket worked perfectly.
A lovely escape from the bustle of Savannah. The tabby ruins were fascinating, and the costumed actors really brought the colonial period to life. It was very hot, so bring water! The tour we booked included transport which was very convenient. A must-do in Savannah.
As a history teacher, Wormsloe was a highlight of my trip to the South. The museum is small but well-curated, and the guided tour component we booked was excellent. The guide was so knowledgeable about Noble Jones and the founding of Georgia. Highly recommended for anyone interested in American history.
We rented a car and drove from Savannah. It was easy to find. The oak alley is the main attraction and it is spectacular. The rest of the park is a nice walk. We spent about 90 minutes here. The ticket we bought through the platform was a good value, especially as it gave us skip-the-line access on a surprisingly busy day.
The famous oak drive is five stars, truly breathtaking. However, once you get past that, there isn't a huge amount to see. The tabby ruins are interesting but small. It's worth it for the photos of the avenue alone, but manage your expectations for the rest of the site. Glad we went, but maybe a shorter visit is best.
I came to Savannah specifically to photograph this location, and it exceeded all my hopes. I recommend arriving the moment they open to have the avenue to yourself. The Spanish moss in the morning light is a photographer's dream. The tour I joined was small and the guide gave me excellent tips on where to get the best shots.
This place is what you imagine when you think of the old American South. The trees are just magnificent. We took a tour that combined Wormsloe with a visit to Bonaventure Cemetery, and it was the perfect day trip. Seamless booking experience and a great local guide.
Everything you need to know for your journey
Wormsloe is the former colonial estate of Noble Jones, one of Georgia's founding colonists. Today, it's a state historic site famous for its spectacular 1.5-mile avenue of live oaks, the tabby ruins of the original 18th-century home, a museum, and living history areas.
Visitors can drive their personal vehicles down the main avenue from the entrance to the parking area near the museum. However, to truly experience its grandeur and take photos, most visitors park and walk at least a portion of the avenue.
We recommend allocating at least 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This gives you enough time to walk the oak avenue, explore the museum and visitor center, see the tabby ruins, and walk some of the scenic nature trails.
Yes, it's a great destination for families. The vast open spaces are perfect for kids to explore. The living history demonstrations are particularly engaging for children, offering an interactive way to learn about the past.
'Tabby' is a type of concrete made from burning oyster shells to create lime, then mixing it with sand, water, and whole oyster shells. The ruins at Wormsloe are the oldest standing structure in Savannah and a fascinating example of this early colonial building material.
Spring (March-May) and Fall (September-November) offer the most pleasant weather for walking the grounds. Spring features blooming azaleas, while Fall has cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer can be very hot and humid.
While general admission allows you to explore on your own, a guided tour can greatly enhance your experience. Our partner operators provide knowledgeable guides who share deep insights into the site's history, ecology, and the lives of the people who lived there, which you might otherwise miss.
Wormsloe is located on the Isle of Hope, about a 15-20 minute drive from downtown Savannah. While you can drive and park on-site, many of the tours available for booking on our platform conveniently include round-trip transportation from central Savannah locations.
Yes, photography is highly encouraged, especially along the iconic oak avenue! It is one of the most photographed spots in Savannah. However, the use of drones is not permitted on the property.
